It’s refreshing to see Wayne back doing what he does best.įrom a technical perspective, Wayne’s lyricism is exactly what you’d expect, for better or worse. While this initial energy grows a little stale following the sleeper that is “My Heart Races On”, Wayne still has fun on most of the project. “I Feel Good” features a killer James Brown re-working courtesy of Infamous over which Wayne sounds joyous for the first time in years. Right away, the album answers the question of whether or not Wayne can still make hot music with a resounding yes. The album opens with the aggressive “Glory”, which has been on the internet for weeks, then quickly transitions into “He’s Dead”, a strong track from longtime YMCMB hitmaker Kane Beatz that finds Wayne saying “rest in peace to the Cash Money Weezy, gone but not forgotten” on the bridge. In fact, parts of it serve as a bittersweet breakup letter much like the music of a young Taylor Swift felt. It should be stated right away that the Free Weezy Album does not ignore the drama with Cash Money.

Is he still relevant? And more importantly, after numerous lackluster albums and tapes, can he still make hot music? But he is, undeniably, both a legendary and influential artist, the vast majority of whose musical output is far from the “trash” some will have you believe it is. Wayne is not, nor has he ever been, the best rapper alive.
A decade later, that claim seems just as prophetic as it does ignorant.
On Tha Carter II, which remains Wayne’s magnum opus, he anointed himself the “Best Rapper Alive”. This is, in part, due to the fact that Wayne has always seemed comfortable labeling himself. Any consumer with an opinion on popular music shows no hesitation labeling Wayne whether that label be one elevating him to the status of all-time great or dismissing him entirely and blaming him for unfortunate trends in current hip-hop.
